Swimming

Swimming describes movement through water, usually without the need of artificial assistance. It’s an activity that can be both useful and recreational. Swimming is a great way to relax while enjoying a good full-body workout. In fact, swimming is a good exercise choice for just about anyone because it is gentle on the joints and can be beneficial even for those who may find other activities limiting or even painful.

Considered a low-impact, aerobic workout, swimming can actually bear a portion of your water. When you are immersed up to your chest, the water bears up to 50% of your weight so your joints don’t have to. Many athletes swim when injured to keep themselves in good physical condition. The activity is also fantastic for people with arthritis and even asthma.

Of course, none of this answers the question – how does swimming get me fit?

Swimming uses all of the major muscle groups such as the shoulders, leg, hips, glutes and arms. Water, which offers more resistance than air, proves to be a great strength builder. Swimming can help you improve your posture and give you a leaner appearance although it won’t give you too many muscles and it’s not meant to be a weight loss catalyst. Swimming can help you whittle away the pounds in conjunction with other cardiovascular exercises such as jogging or bicycling as well as eating a diet high in complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and lots of fruits and vegetables.

To get started swimming, you might want to find a swim coach or join a masters swimming class. “Masters Swimming Classes” are meant for those over the age of 20 – they are not considered expert level. When you begin exercising, start light. 10 minute intervals should be sufficient. You will probably want to build up to a 30 minute workout, 3-5 times per week, including a warm-up and a cool down.

The only equipment you need is a comfortable swimsuit, a pool (lake, etc.) and perhaps some goggles.
