Stretching

Stretching is a type of physical exercise that deliberately elongates (or stretches) a specific muscle or group of muscles to improve the muscle’s elasticity and, as a direct result, its functioning. Stretching can increase one’s muscle control, aid in building flexibility and allow for a fuller range of motion within different muscle groups.

The greatest thing about stretching is that just about anyone can do it regardless of age or ability. Stretching is a natural, or instinctual, activity. Stretching exercises can be done while you’re sitting at your TV or computer, after waking up from a good night’s sleep or a nap, before (and after) a cardiovascular or weight lifting routing and much more.

Stretching does not require a huge time commitment or even specialized knowledge. As we age, the more we need to keep our muscles and tendons in good working order. Elasticity declines with the increase of years. However, stretching exercises can help turn back the hands of time. Stretching does have a variety of benefits including, but not limited to:

  • reduces muscle tension
  • improves circulation
  • relieves anxiety, stress and fatigue
  • increases mental alertness
  • decreases your risk for injury
  • aids in workout recovery
  • and helps you work on a correct exercise posture.

It’s important to stretch to keep your muscles and tendons in shape so that they can handle sporting activities and exercise. Stretching should be a part of regular exercise routine. It is often incorporated a few minutes before and after a cardiovascular workout such as running, jogging or swimming. No matter what you should make time for stretching. Why? It will keep your muscles healthy and your body in good working order.
